Runes

the Art of Divination

About the Origin of Runes

The origin of the runes has been lost to ancient history but their earliest use seems to have been with the Alpine Germanic people, some sources claim with the Heruli tribe. This is speculated because the earliest title for the masters of the runes amongst the early Viking tribes was the word "heruli".

Runes were last in current use during the Middle Ages. The first glyphs of the alphabet were called runes from the Gothic runa, meaning "a secret thing, a mystery" and were used for many purposes such as casting, healing, travel and battle protection.

The spiritual values of the runes have developed throughout the ages, primarily through the Germanic thought-world, and have a very close connection with the old Germanic religion and mythology. In fact, some say they are so closely tied to the old Germanic religion that the use of runes, without a basic and, perferably, advanced knowledge of the religion would be a waste of time, as most of their meaning and value would go unfathomed. Further it has been noted that in addition to having a written sigil, runes also have a sound that is sung to represent them. These rune-songs are knows as galdr, and any magickal use of runes should include them.

Today runes more and more become a very preferred divination tool, especially when carved into crystals or stone as they are very durable and can combine the energy of the stone with the divinational meaning for the bearer. We offer runes in sets of same and sometimes mixed stones.

At the Wishing Well we try to keep a stock of at least 3 per rune type and change the choice of stones often to give as many as possible people the opportunity to have just the set that "speaks" to them. You can also order special sets at an additional charge. Those sets will be specifically crafted for the customer and will have a waiting period. Please allow 3-4 weeks before you need to have them.
